Gifts -- Ironwood Carvings
The makers of these ironwood carvings describes their product as follows: "We search the Sonoran Desert Region and small towns in Sonora Mexico to find the best carvers available that use only fallen Ironwood (Olneya tesota).
The wood is extremely hard, dense and stable and matures at 2000 years. It is heavy and will not float in water. Ironwood is typcally used for fuelwood, charcoal and carvings. Ironwood takes on a brilliant finish when poslished.
Desert Ironwood does not shrink or move like most other hardwoods. With our special process, the pores of the Ironwood shrink and close completely sealing itself whinin its natural oils, making moisture penetration virtually impossible.
Recent demand for Ironwood fuel and widespread cutting has seriously reduced the numbers of these trees. In many countries in Central American Ironwood is now Federally protected and is now on the endangered species list. This is why we place such a high level of importance on our master carvers utilizing only fallen Desert Ironwood."
